10 Things to Do in Yuma AZ
Yuma was originally founded as Colorado City. It later assumed greater significance as thousands of opportunist Americans travelled south via Yuma to California to cash in on the 1849 gold rush.
Packed with history and surrounded by nature, let’s explore the best things to do in Yuma, Arizona.
1. Historic Downtown
The destructive floods of the past mean that most buildings here now only date back to the 1920’s, but with the revitalization of this area, the history lives on.
Discover what the North End has to offer with historic tours, or simply enjoy the shopping, dining and entertainment that can be found.
There are regularly fairs or events on in the area as well.
2. Yuma Territorial Prison State Historical Park
No longer in operation, Yuma Territorial Prison is now a state historical park with quite the reputation.
It was strategically built (by its very own pioneering prisoners) on the banks of the Colorado as an additional safety measure against common jailbreaks of the time.
Don’t forget to snap your own mugshot before leaving using the original mirror that created a simultaneous front and side profile in one photo.
3. Gateway Park
With your toes in the sand and history overhead, Yuma’s Gateway Park offers a family friendly riverside spot to pass a warm day.
This is the best place to observe the historic Ocean To Ocean Bridge, which was originally designed to carry the Ocean to Ocean Highway. The bridge was renovated and reopened to vehicles in 2002 after 14 years of pedestrian and bicycle only traffic.
The park is the perfecting setting for a picnic with its playgrounds and a little beach next to the refreshing waters of the Colorado River.
4. Colorado River State Historic Park
Containing the old U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot and the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, this park has a mix of full on history and fun exhibits for children.
It is home to some of Arizona’s oldest buildings, where you can soak up information and follow the history of the Colorado River and it’s crucial crossing in Yuma in the time of the Old West.
To keep the children engaged, head to the Yuma Crossing area to learn about the railroad, see the original pivot point and board the steam train on display.
5. Castle Dome Mine Museum & Ghost Town
Where a bustling mining town once reigned, the abandoned city of Castle Dome now lies utterly empty.
You can make your way through more than 50 buildings, including homes, shops, and a church, each offering their own input to build the history of the town.
Frozen in time, this western ghost town preserves a precious history of the Old West for all to enjoy.
6. Waylon’s Water Park
Full of family fun, featuring more than 15 slides and attractions, Waylon’s water park is a refreshing stop with plenty to do.
Not restricted to getting wet, thorough entertainment can be found on the mini golf course alone.
With a pleasant restaurant on site, this place caters to all ages and is the perfect hideaway on a hot day.
7. East Wetlands Environmental Restoration Area
Not far from Yuma Prison lies the recently restored natural habitat area of Yuma’s East Wetlands.
Since the restoration began in 2002, the removal of trash and dirt and replanting of native species has triggered a huge increase in bird species. The wetlands hold several trails and paths to walk or cycle, and some nice areas to stop and rest while and enjoy the nature.
8. The “Official” Center of the World
Just a short drive from Yuma in Imperial County, California, this seemingly random point has been approved as the official Centre of the World by the Californian state and the French government.
Established in the 80’s by Jacques-Andre Istel, the site consists of many interesting monuments, including a spiral staircase to nowhere, formerly part of the Eiffel Tower.
You will also find a set of granite pyramids meant to depict the history of humanity, a church, and of course a plaque marking the spot.
This bizarre stop is only open from March to December, but you will get a certificate when you visit.
9. Yuma River Tubing
From April to September in the sunny summer months of Arizona, Yuma River Tubing offers an excellent alternative way to experience the Colorado River.
No matter how old you are, you’re free to try and sure to love this floating journey from where the company drop you upstream, under the Ocean to Ocean bridge, all the way back to West Wetlands Park.
The activity takes about an hour and you can even take refreshments and at the right time enjoy the sunset, surrounded by your friends or family.
It’s best to reserve as spots fill up fast, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun!
10. Martha’s Gardens Date Farm
Arizona, particularly Yuma, is quickly becoming an ever more popular place for date production.
It is hardly surprising since dates require continuous sunshine and Yuma holds the title of the sunniest place in the world.
At Martha’s Gardens you can wander through the palm groves and learn about the growing process and history of the organic farm.
You can also grab lunch, try their famed date shake, and buy other dare products to take away before leaving.

6 Tips to Staying Cool in Your RV
Anyone who enjoys the RV lifestyle knows that it can be tricky managing the intense heat that comes along with the new season. Running the AC unit is the easy answer, but that will use a lot of energy and tax the unit.
Here are 6 tips to help you stay cool!
1. Chill Out Under Your RV Awning and Shade Rooms
RV awnings are designed to expand your living space and provide shade coverage. It’s not easy finding any RVer who doesn’t reap the benefits of this necessary accessory, but taking the time to build a lounge-worthy area underneath your awning will make it that much more appealing when the sun rays are heating up the inside of your rig.
Lazing the day away on some comfortable outdoor furniture isn’t a bad way to spend your time, especially as the shade provides much-needed relief from the overwhelming sun. Creating an RV Shade Room is a great way to keep cool.
If you’re not looking for an entire annex, there are also simpler sun-blocking materials available that you can attach to your awning.
2. Block the Light Entering Through Your Windows
Most of the heat gain that enters into your RV comes in through your windows. Because of this, you’ll naturally want to reduce the amount of light that can enter. You can do this by installing window awnings as well as window shades.
Window shades are made of material that block light, and they function similar to blinds. Some are even transparent so that you can still look outside.
Window awnings attach to the outside of your windows, and they significantly reduce the amount of sunlight that enters in when they are retracted.
There are DIY options for this as well, if you are on a budget.
3. Park In the Shade
A small thing that will make a big difference is being purposeful of where and how you park your RV. If you’re staying at a campground, call ahead and try to reserve a spot with ample shade. Naturally, this will keep your RV cooler.
Additionally, you can figure out what direction the sun is coming from, and angle your parking job so that the side of your RV with the most windows is directed away from that direction.
4. Hydrate Thoroughly
During your summer RV stay, it’s highly important to stay hydrated. You’re most likely sweating more, which means you’re losing moisture and essential electrolytes. The commonly heard advice is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but factors such as lifestyle, age, gender, weight, and weather all impact the necessary intake.
Mild dehydration can lead to headaches and dizziness, whereas severe dehydration can lead to serious health conditions, such as heat. Because you’re often on the go while RVing, you’ll need to be especially proactive in ensuring you’re getting enough liquids.
5. Don’t Cook Inside During the Day
If your RV is already uncomfortably hot, avoid making things worse by trying to use the stove or oven during the day. Doing so will noticeably increase the internal temperature.
Instead, plan ahead, and eat meals that can be prepared cold, such as green salads, cold sandwiches, tasty bruschetta, fruit platters, or pasta salads. If you really want something hot, try to eat something that can easily be made in the microwave.
Alternatively, get a portable grill so you can cook outside in the shade!
6. Enjoy the Cooling Elements of the Outdoors
If the sun is busy baking the inside of your RV, take the time to explore the natural cooling solutions of the great outdoors.

15 Things To Have in your RV
Staying in an RV is a great experience and can be a great way of life for many. There are a number of items that help this experience be a better one. Here are 15:
1. Drinking Hose
Have a clean and ready-to-use drinking hose for your fresh water tank. Keep the two ends connected while traveling so that nothing climbs up into the hose when it’s not in use!
2. 30 Amp / 50 Amp Surge Protector
It is imperative to keep your RV electrical system in good shape. Whether you are running a 30 amp or 50 amp system, you want to have a surge protector. It is a little pricey, but nothing compared to replacing the system itself.
3. Sewer Hose
Simply put, you have to have a sewer hose. 20 feet is a good length. While you are at it, make sure you have a clear sewer connector, so you see when the tanks are fully dumped. Even better, make sure you also have disposable gloves…
4. Leveling Blocks
Leveling blocks can come in handy for a number of different things. Get some.
5. Air Compressor
Ever get a flat tire on your RV? An air compressor is a very handy item to have here!
6. RV GPS
An RV GPS can help you figure out how to get where you want to go, based on your size RV. How amazing!
7. Shower Head
A good showerhead gives you a good shower experience, and you want that in your RV. Putting a water pressure regulator on your system is not the worst idea, as well.
8. Mattress
Get the most comfortable mattress you can. Nothing replaces a good night’s sleep!
9. Tire Gauge
A blowout is something you don’t want. Check your tires with some frequency with a gauge.
10. Cast Iron Skillet
You are going to want to cook over fire as well as on a stovetop. Cast iron is the way to go!
11. Your Kitchen
A good set of knives and a good blender will go a long way here…Grilling utensils come in handy, so you might as well get a grill for outside cooking, too!
12. Table & Chairs
Have a good table and chairs for outside. These will come in handy often.
13. Cell Signal Booster
Don’t miss important calls; make sure you have this for your phones.
14. Laptop Stand
Doing work on a laptop is that much easier with a laptop stand. Get one.

Rainy day in Yuma? Say it ain’t so! Don’t worry, though, we have 7 Rainy Day Activities for you to enjoy!
One of the advantages of parking your RV here at Bonita Mesa RV Park Resort is that we are in beautiful Yuma, Arizona. With the sun shining most of the year, you have so much you can do and so many things to see!
Ah, but what about the days when rain is falling down? Not to worry! There are 7 great things, both in and out of your RV, that you can do!
1. Marshmallow Crafts And Games
If there’s one unspoken rule of RVing, it’s that you must have marshmallows on hand at all times. S’mores may be off the menu on a rainy day (unless you cheat and use the microwave), you can still get some use out of them! Get creative and play tic-tac-toe with marshmallows and chocolate. The winner gets to eat the pieces! You can also build things like towers with them, because they are sticky!
2. Have a Movie Theater Experience
Don’t just slap a DVD into your system to watch a movie. Make it an experience! Make some popcorn. Bake cookies. Make some finger foods. When you have the menu prepared, set up your RV like a theater. Hang some blankets around your viewing area. Fluff up all the pillows for maximum comfort. Pick your favorite comedy or thriller, or pop open the brand new movie you just got, and enjoy!
3. Read a Good Book – Visit Our Library?
Sometimes life is moving so fast that we forget some of the simple pleasures it has to offer. One of these pleasures is reading. 4. Get a Good Workout In
Rain can be accompanied by chilly weather, even here in Yuma. Sometime that weather can make you feel sore or achy. A great solution for both your body pain and the rain is to get a good workout in. Your body can stretch out and warm up, your mind will wake up and you will feel better in general. But you don’t need to try and do this in your RV, not when Bonita Mesa RV Park Resort offers you an exercise facility to get your sweat on! Oh, and if you have pets, we even have a pet area for exercise!
6. Play Some Games
Game playing can be a great way to connect with family and friends alike. You can play cards games or board games and these activities can take place inside your RV. But if you want to get out and stretch your legs a bit, you can go to the newly remodeled Pool Room with new pool tables and play 8 or 9 ball. You can also play Texas Hold ‘Em in our new Poker Room. No matter what your game of choice is, playing games is a great rainy day activity.

All of those choices sound like fun, right? So why ruin the mood? J No matter how you slice it, a rainy day is a great time to catch up on chores.
